# Walmart is opening its shelves to AI agents — a bet on the future built on customer-centric thinking

*2026-10-26*

Walmart's new MCP-based Agent Gateway will let approved AI agents interact with its retail ecosystem, with controls to keep customers in charge. It's a bet on where commerce is heading, based on where consumer behaviour is already shifting — and customer-centricity applied to an AI-first world.

Walmart's latest move into agentic commerce is both a bet on the future and an example of customer-centric thinking.
Its new MCP-based Agent Gateway will let approved AI agents interact with Walmart's retail ecosystem, with controls to keep customers in charge.

## Why is this a bet on where commerce is heading?

It's a bet on where commerce is heading, based on where consumer behaviour is already shifting.
51% of US consumers used an AI tool to support their shopping in the past month. Meta's personal AI agent, Muse, has attracted more than 10 million accounts in the US and Canada since launching in September.

## Why isn't shopping with AI the same as trusting it to buy?

But using AI to shop and trusting it to buy are two different things. NIQ's May 2026 research found that just 5% of US consumers had used fully autonomous AI agents to place orders on their behalf. But the trust will come probably sooner than a lot of brand count on.

## What does customer-centricity look like in an AI-first world?

Walmart is preparing for where commerce might very likely go while meeting customers where they are today. It already serves them through stores, digital channels and AI integrations. Now it's building the capability to serve them through the agents they choose. That's customer-centricity applied to an AI-first world: don't force customers into your ecosystem. Be ready to meet them in theirs.

## Does the bet pay off commercially?

Of course, the bet still needs to pay off commercially. Walmart must protect the customer experience, make the economics work and retain a meaningful role in the transaction.
I'll also be watching what this means for retail media. If more product discovery and selection happen through AI agents, how will Walmart's advertising formats, inventory and revenue model evolve?

## What happens next?

Consumer behaviour is changing. Customer expectations will follow.

## Key takeaways

- Walmart's MCP-based Agent Gateway will let approved AI agents interact with its retail ecosystem, with controls to keep customers in charge.
- 51% of US consumers used an AI tool to support their shopping in the past month; Meta's Muse has passed 10 million accounts in the US and Canada since launching in September.
- Only 5% of US consumers have used fully autonomous AI agents to place orders — but that trust is likely to arrive sooner than many brands count on.
- Walmart is applying customer-centricity to an AI-first world: don't force customers into your ecosystem, be ready to meet them in theirs.
- If discovery and selection shift to AI agents, Walmart's advertising formats, inventory and revenue model will have to evolve — watch retail media.
