§ Agentic commerce

TikTok Shop's Southeast Asian sales grew tenfold in three years. Every major market in the region more than doubled year on year in 2025.

TikTok and Meta have both bet on agents that work for the seller, not the shopper. In Southeast Asia, where live-stream selling is the default discovery layer, the immediate opportunity is adopting the operational agent your platform is already handing you.

TikTok Shop's Southeast Asian sales grew tenfold in three years. Every major market in the region, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, more than doubled year on year in 2025.

Every post in this series so far has been about a consumer asking an AI where to buy something, ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Comet. TikTok has skipped that fight entirely and its SEA numbers explain why. In Thailand and Vietnam, live-stream selling is the default discovery mechanism, multi-hour sessions where hosts sell products in real time to audiences already watching. Nobody in that audience needs to ask an assistant what to buy. The discovery already happened, live, on video, before the question would ever get typed. Building a chat-based shopping assistant into a market that runs on live commerce solves a problem that market doesn't have.

This is the fifth in a short series on the different types of agents shaping how, and whether, brands get chosen. Where the first four posts were about agents working for the shopper, TikTok and Meta have both put their AI effort into agents working for the seller instead.

TikTok's investment sits entirely there. Seller Assistant, built into TikTok Shop's own dashboard, became fully agentic in July, reasoning through problems and taking actions with a seller's permission across products, orders, finance, shipping and returns. AI Homepage replaces the seller dashboard with five specialised agents surfacing shop data and next actions automatically.

Meta has arrived at the same answer from a different angle. Its Business Agent lets a business run its own AI storefront inside WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger, recommending from its own catalogue and closing sales.

The reasoning behind each platform's bet is different.

TikTok's biggest SEA markets already run on live, video-led discovery so a chat assistant would be solving a problem that doesn't exist there.

Meta's logic is different: WhatsApp and Messenger already carry huge volumes of businesses closing sales manually inside chat threads so an agent that can answer, recommend and close within that same conversation is a natural extension of existing behaviour, not a replacement for a discovery layer Meta is still building in parallel through Meta AI. Different starting points but both arrived at the same conclusion e.g. the commercial upside for both platforms sits on the seller's side first.

For sellers, especially in SEA, the opportunity right now isn't being found by someone else's chat agent. It's adopting the operational agent your own platform is already handing you and the sellers moving first on Seller Assistant and Business Agent are gaining a real edge over the ones still waiting.

§ Takeaways
  • TikTok Shop's SEA sales grew tenfold in three years; live-stream selling is the default discovery layer, so TikTok has focused its AI investment on seller-side agents rather than shopper chatbots.
  • Meta's Business Agent turns WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger into AI storefronts for businesses, extending behaviour that already happens in chat threads rather than replacing Meta AI discovery.
  • For sellers in SEA and beyond, the immediate edge is adopting the operational agents your platform already provides — Seller Assistant and Business Agent — not waiting for chat-based discovery.
